That requires a bullet with a diameter of 9 millimeters, similar in size to a caliber of.357 of an inch. Larger bullets have greater stopping power, but must be fired from bigger guns that are hard to conceal, heavy to carry. 
Guns using.357- or 9-millimeter cartridges are either revolvers or semiautomatic pistols known as 'nines.' The revolver, a comparatively simple device dating from the early 19th century, commonly fires six rounds from a cylinder that rotates with each pull of the trigger. The semiautomatic, which dates from the late 19th century, typically fires cartridges from a magazine that fits in the gun's grip. As each cartridge is discharged, the recoil drives a heavy slide surrounding the gun's barrel.
Traveling back and forth in a fraction of a second, the slide automatically recocks the firing pin, ejects the spent casing and moves a fresh cartridge from the magazine into the firing chamber.
